The ‘Wicklow Dry Stone Wall’ project aspired to inspire a deeper appreciation for dry stone walling as both a cultural tradition and a sustainable land management practice fostering stewardship of heritage landscapes and promoting community engagement in their preservation.
Wicklow Uplands Council are grateful to the Heritage Council – Heritage Community Grant for the support to explore dry stone wall (DSW) construction techniques, heritage, and conservation through an informative walk & talk, a detailed weekend hands-on workshop and the production of the lasting recording which embodies the significance of our dry stone wall heritage across the Wicklow landscape.
Participants partaking across the various elements of the project gained insight into their cultural and ecological significance. Those that partook in our training course, [delivered by experts and volunteers from the Dry Stone Wall Association of Ireland] learned the principles of technique & the practical skills of Dry Stone Walling. Participants were from various backgrounds, skill levels, including practitioners, conservation experts, ecology educators, heritage professionals, historians and landowners.
We are grateful to all those involved in bringing this lasting material together. We look forward to rolling out a further training course in 2024.
