DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nWICKLOW HERITAGE TRAILS –  INFORMATION EVENING IN ROUNDWOOD\nAn open information evening will be hosted by the Heritage Office of Wicklow County Council and the Wicklow Uplands Council in Roundwood Parish Centre at 7pm on Wednesday next\, 4th July\, to discuss a heritage recording project. \n  \nThe meeting will focus on using the network of walking trails in the east of the county (existing and in development) as a basis on which to develop a Local Heritage Recording Project which will connect\, via heritage recording and interpretation\, the trails and associated towns\, villages and places along the way. \n  \nAs part of this initial phase\, Abarta Heritage has been engaged to compile information using local information and other sources and to generate digital “points of interest”. \n  \nIt is intended that this project upon completion will inform the future development of visitor and tourism interpretation to promote this area as part of Ireland’s Ancient East. \nOther heritage recording projects have been successfully carried out in recent years in the Blessington Lakeside area\, the River Liffey\, West Wicklow and South West Wicklow.\nFor more information\, please see: www.countywicklowheritage.org \n  \n“Local people know their area better than anyone else”\, said Deirdre Burns\, Heritage Officer with Wicklow County Council\, “We would like to engage with local communities\, groups and individuals to record their stories relating to the historic settlements\, wildlife and the rich cultural heritage of the area”.   \n  \nBrian Dunne\, co-ordinator with Wicklow Uplands Council\, has been working with landowners on the development of agreed access trails.  “There is good network of agreed access routes already in place in the east of the county from Bray to Woodenbridge” he explained adding: “The focus of this project will be on this geographic area\, incorporating towns and villages along the way such as Kilmacanogue\, Roundwood\, Annamoe\, Laragh\, Rathdrum and Avoca”.  \n  \nThe Wicklow Trails Heritage Recording Project is co-ordinated jointly by the Heritage Office of Wicklow County Council and the Wicklow Uplands Council with funding support from The Heritage Council through the County Wicklow Heritage Plan Fund. \n  \nFor all queries please contact:\nDeirdre Burns: dburns@wicklowcoco.ie  T: 0404 20100\nBrian Dunne bdunne@wicklowuplands.ie  T: 01 281 8406.

DESCRIPTION:‘Wicklow Connections’\n– A Celebration of the Cultural Heritage of County Wicklow –\n  \n \n  \nWicklow Uplands Council Photo Competition 2018 \n€500 in Prizes – Closing Date 7th August 2018 \n  \nCounty Wicklow is renowned as the ‘Garden of Ireland’ due to the diversity and quality of its landscape. Rolling mountains\, glaciated valleys\, woodlands and deep lakes along with many rural towns and villages characterise the Wicklow uplands landscape. This spectacular landscape is a living landscape with every aspect having the imprint of human activity. It has been shaped by the activities of those who live and work in the area along with those who visit and use it for recreational purposes. Our connection with the landscape is an important part of our cultural heritage and an integral part in the fabric of our lives. \nThe aim of this photographic competition is to acknowledge and celebrate the rich and diverse cultural heritage of County Wicklow and the contribution that this provides to our daily lives and our sense of place. The competition is being organised in celebration of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH) which encourages us to ‘Make a Connection’ and to deepen the connection between people and heritage. \n  \nCultural Heritage refers to the interactions of people and communities with their landscape from generation to generation and their ways of living. It can be distinguished in the rural landscape\, townscapes\, buildings\, archaeological sites & monuments\, agricultural heritage and heritage objects. Cultural Heritage may also be expressed in intangible forms and may include customs & traditional skills\, clothing\, oral history and folklore. \n  \nWicklow Uplands Council invites you to send us photos which depict aspects of Wicklow’s diverse Cultural Heritage. It might be of the stunning landscape\, a town or village scene\, people at work or play in the landscape\, a building\, an archaeological site or monument\, an activity associated with Wicklow etc.\, Essentially your ‘connection’ with Co Wicklow. Entrants are encouraged to provide a short caption (60 words max) which provides insight into the story behind the image. \nEntries to the competition will be selected to form an exhibition on the Cultural Heritage Theme ‘Wicklow Connections’ which will be launched at The Brockagh Resource Centre for National Heritage Week 2018 (www.heritageweek.ie). \n  \n\nCompetition Details\n  \nHow to Enter:\nTo give you the best chance of winning and to make sure that the photographs are suitable for display\, we have put together a few guidelines and pointers for you \n  \nTheme:\nThe theme of the competition is ‘Wicklow Connections’ in conjunction with the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH) and its aim to ‘Make a Connection’. Photographs may be taken in any location in County Wicklow or the Dublin Uplands. \n  \nEntries will be organised into the following categories: \nTowns & Villages: Co Wicklow is scattered with many rural towns and villages each with their own unique and distinctive character. These towns and villages play a very important role in our cultural heritage as the centres of civic and commercial life while reflecting social\, political and economic trends. We would love to see images of from Wicklow’s towns and villages including; townscapes\, buildings\, old shop fronts\, architectural features\, market squares\, monuments etc. \nRural Landscape: As long as people have lived in Wicklow they have interacted and placed objects in the surrounding spectacular landscape. Interactions with the natural environment are an important feature of our Cultural Heritage and shaped the landscape as we know it today. From agricultural practices\, forestry & mining\, to the placement of prehistoric monuments and burial sites to the building of stones walls\, we would love to see your photos of the rural landscape \nActivities: The Wicklow and Dublin uplands are a living landscape where people live\, work\, and recreate. We all enjoy the landscape and we would like to see photos which demonstrate people at work or play in the uplands. This includes activities in an upland town or village setting. \n  \nUnder 14’s will be judged as a separate category \n  \nCompetition Guidelines: \n\nA maximum of three photos can be entered per person and must:\n\n\nInclude a photo caption (up to 60 words max) which provides some insight into the connection with the photo e.g. What is your ‘Connection’ with the image; what is the story associated with the subject of the image; is there an upland connection? Etc.\nIdentify which competition category below best fits your image\nProvide the name\, age and contact phone number of the photographer*\nIdentify the location of the photo and the date it was taken\n\n  \n\nEntries to be emailed in jpeg format to info@wicklowuplands.ie\nThis is an amateur photographic competition which is open to all ages.\nThe nominated judges will select winners and their decision is final\nThe closing date for entries is the evening of the 7th August 2018.\n\n  \nExhibiting Photographs: \nEntries will feature in a photographic exhibition at The Brockagh Centre Laragh during National Heritage Week.
